The Arizona State University Consortium for Science Policy and Outcomes, in collaboration with NASA, Museum of Science Boston, and SciStarter, are conducting a research study to engage the public on the topic of asteroid threats to the planet, and how NASA will develop an Asteroid Initiative to address these threats.
The goal of the NASA Asteroid Initiative Deliberation (AID) research is two-fold: to assess the participants’ views on the risk of asteroid strikes and the effect the deliberation has in formulating them. The project aims to advance our understanding of ways for citizens to become more directly involved in national science policy issues and will provide insight into designing ways for ordinary people to participate in technological practices and policies from local through national, and perhaps international levels.
You are invited to participate in the drafting and discussion of those questions. This may involve solicitation of your concerns about asteroid-related issues, your response to previously voiced concerns or questions, and the collection of some demographic information. You have the right not to answer any question, or to remove yourself from involvement at any time. Participants’ contributions will be signed with a user name of the participant’s choice. Email addresses and/or telephone numbers are recorded internally only as a means of validating a participant’s identity, and for project staff to communicate with participants, and will never be shared nor made visible on the website. There are no foreseeable risks or discomforts to your participation.
Your participation in this study is voluntary. If you choose not to participate or to withdraw from the study at any time, there will be no penalty. You must be 18 or older to participate in the research study. Your responses will be anonymous, unless you decide otherwise. The results of this study may be used in reports, presentations, or publications but your name will not be known. Most results will only be shared in the aggregate form and any individual comments will remain anonymous.
If you have any questions concerning the research study, please contact the research team via: Darlene Cavalier (Darlene dot Cavalier at asu.edu). If you have any questions about your rights as a subject/participant in this research, or if you feel you have been placed at risk, you can contact the Chair of the Human Subjects Institutional Review Board, through the ASU Office of Research Integrity and Assurance, at (480) 965-6788.
Thank you for your participation in the NASA AID research!
